About the Aviation Wildlife Risk Assessment (AWRA) Tool
Welcome to the Aviation Wildlife Risk Assessment (AWRA) Tool.
This professional tool empowers airport operators, wildlife management teams, and aviation safety experts to conduct standardized, ICAO-compliant wildlife hazard assessments.
By leveraging an extensive internal database (powered by global bird datasets like AVONET and eBird), this tool instantly calculates risk. It processes your inputs against the ICAO Doc 9137, Part 3, Chapter 3 methodology (Tables 3-4, 3-5, 3-6, and the 3-7 risk matrix).
This allows you to generate auditable, data-driven risk values (Severity and Likelihood) for any species. Make informed decisions, enhance your Wildlife Hazard Management Programme (WHMP), and contribute to safer skies for everyone.
Methodology
This tool implements the risk assessment model described in ICAO Doc 9137, Part 3, Chapter 3.
- Severity is calculated based on a hybrid formula using species Body Mass (ICAO Table 3-4) and Flocking Behavior (ICAO Table 3-5), which produces a final Severity Category (ICAO Table 3-6).
- Likelihood is based on the qualitative assessment of species Presence (ICAO Table 3-1).
- Risk is determined by plotting these two categories on the 5x5 Risk Matrix (ICAO Table 3-7).
- Baseline species data is sourced from global bird datasets (AVONET/eBird), mapped to the ICAO mass categories.
